What to Ask, What to Expect & How to Get the Most Out of Your Session
Whether you've had a tarot reading before or not, it can be pretty intimidating knowing what to ask, how to approach your reading, or even what to expect from a tarot reader.
Here, we're going to demystify the process of getting a tarot reading and help you understand how you can best prepare for your next session.
Know Your WHY…
The why behind getting a tarot reading is just as important, if not more important, than the specific question you ask or what you wish to gain from your reading. Why? Because it sets the stage for your self-reflection and gives us a point of reference to work from.
Your why is simple: Why do you want or feel you need a tarot reading at this time in your life?
Are you feeling aimless and unmotivated?
Are you going through major changes and looking for some reassurance about your direction?
Are you about to make a big decision and want more clarity before moving forward?
Have you experienced a major life change, such as a breakup, loss, relocation, or family struggle, and want to feel more grounded?
Does life feel like Groundhog Day, and you want to understand how to break out of stagnancy or repeated cycles?
Do you feel misunderstood, not only by the people around you but by yourself, and want to gain more clarity about who you are and who you can become?
Are you excited to start a new venture and want to move forward with a clearer sense of direction and how to achieve your goals?
Are you disappointed by your love life and want to understand what you can do to become more aligned with the love you desire?
Are you happy with where your life is at but aren't quite sure what's next or how to keep moving in the direction of growth?
Are you unhappy with your life and want to learn how to move with more intention and purpose to create positive change?
Or are you simply curious and looking for something to reflect on and think about?
Understanding your why is what sets the stage for getting the most out of your tarot reading.
Should you tell your tarot reader your why?
Honestly, that's entirely up to you. But I will say that tarot is at its best when it's collaborative.
What do I mean by collaborative?
Let's say I'm giving you a reading about a difficult situation involving heartbreak and disappointment. If what I'm explaining that I see in the cards is something you're experiencing, letting me know that it resonates and sharing a little about how it connects to your life helps me pull more contextual advice and meaning from the rest of the cards. It can even help me tie the entire reading together in a way that's more meaningful to you.
When should you tell your tarot reader your why?
The beginning of your reading is a great time to let a psychic tarot reader, such as myself, know why you're seeking a reading in the first place, especially if you want me to pull as much helpful advice and depth from the cards as possible.
Isn't your why the same as your question?
Not really!
Your why is the overarching reason you're seeking divination. Your question is more of a prompt that helps us narrow the scope of the reading and explore something more specific.
For example, your why might be:
“I'm feeling lost, kind of stuck, and unsure of what my next steps should be.”
Your question could then be:
“How can I best inspire momentum within myself to move forward with purpose?”
The question is what we're exploring through the cards, but your why helps explain why finding an answer matters to you in the first place.
That context can make all the difference.
What If you Don't Want to Share Details About your Life?
You might be thinking, “Chloe, what if I don't want to tell you things about my life?”
That's completely fair!
You can tell me as much or as little as you want. You can ask your question, or even keep it written down without sharing it with me and see how I approach the reading.
Your privacy is yours, and you get to decide what you're comfortable sharing.
That said, my intuition often picks up on broader themes, nuanced details, and impressions that might feel random or not entirely applicable without some context. Having a little cue from you, whether I'm warm, cold, or somewhere in between, helps me narrow the scope and focus on the details that are more relevant to your life and experience.
You don't need to tell me your entire life story. Sometimes a little context is all it takes to open up a much deeper conversation.
Aren't I a Psychic? Can't I Read your Mind or Know your Life?
This is a common misconception about psychics and divination.
Although I may pick up on details and situations that seem impossible for me to have known, and I may surprise you with my accuracy, that's not the only reason we seek out psychics or divination.
Those moments can feel validating. They can help you feel connected to me and to the reading, and they may be little nudges that help us explore something more deeply.
But if we leave it there and don't collaborate, I may continue pulling from broader themes and potential meanings without realizing that we've skimmed over something deeply transformative in your life.
If you let me know that something I'm speaking about applies to a person, situation, or feeling you're experiencing, I can focus more closely on that intuitive nudge and explore it further with you.
The goal isn't simply to impress you with what I might know. It's to help you discover what a message might mean for you.
That's where some of the most meaningful moments of clarity can happen.
What Questions Should you Ask During a Tarot Reading?
This very much depends on your why and what you'd like to explore.
You don't need to come up with the perfect question, and you certainly don't need to have everything figured out before you sit down for a reading. Sometimes you know exactly what you want to ask, and other times you just know that something in your life needs a little attention.
Here are some open-ended questions you can use as a starting point.
Love & Relationships
What do I need to understand about the patterns I experience in love?
How can I create space for a healthier, more fulfilling relationship?
What am I overlooking in my current relationship dynamic?
How can I navigate this connection while remaining true to myself?
What do I need to learn from my recent heartbreak?
How can I become more open to receiving the love I desire?
What can I do to bring more clarity to my current love life?
Money & Abundance
What beliefs or habits might be influencing my relationship with money?
How can I feel more empowered in my financial decisions?
What strengths can I draw upon to create greater stability?
Where might I be overlooking opportunities for growth?
How can I balance my desire for security with my desire for freedom?
What practical steps can I take to feel more confident about my financial future?
Career & Purpose
What direction feels most aligned with the person I'm becoming?
How can I move forward when I feel stuck or uncertain?
What strengths am I underestimating in myself?
What do I need to consider before making this career change?
How can I pursue my ambitions without sacrificing my well-being?
What is the next meaningful step I can take toward my goals?
Self-Development & Personal Growth
What am I being invited to understand about myself right now?
Which patterns am I ready to outgrow?
Where might I be holding myself back, and what could help me move forward?
How can I reconnect with my intuition and sense of purpose?
What part of myself needs more compassion and understanding?
How can I bring more intention into my everyday life?
Family & Home Life
How can I navigate this family dynamic while honouring my boundaries?
What can I learn about my role in this situation?
How can I communicate my needs more clearly?
What is within my control, and what do I need to release?
How can I create a greater sense of peace and belonging in my home?
How can I navigate a family transition with more clarity?
Remember, these are just starting points. You can always adjust a question to fit your circumstances or ask something entirely different.
The best questions are often the ones that invite you to explore rather than demand a simple yes or no.

What If you Just Want a General Reading?
That's absolutely fine!
It simply means I'll do most of the talking, sharing what I see in the cards and allowing you to draw your own meaning from the messages.
But I'll be honest with you: I find that general readings can sometimes touch just below the surface, leaving you to do the deeper exploration on your own.
If you're confident in your ability to sit with the messages, reflect on what resonates, and connect the dots in your own life, then trust your intuition on that.
However, when we gather general messages without a clear directive or purpose from you, that's what they'll tend to be: general. There may be very specific details that apply to your life, but without knowing which ones resonate, I won't necessarily be able to explore them further or connect them to the bigger picture.
I deeply understand the cards and the many layers of meaning they can hold. When we approach your reading as a conversation, I can help you explore those layers, connect the messages, and guide you through the story the cards are telling.
My belief is that tarot is at its most impactful when you feel comfortable enough to explore those deeper places within yourself. That's where I can do what I do best: help you bring light into the darker corners, find meaning in the mess, and see yourself a little more clearly.

Can you Tell me you Don't Want to Keep Talking About Something That Comes Up in a Reading?
Yes! Please honour your boundaries.
If something comes up in a reading that you don't feel comfortable discussing or exploring further, I want you to tell me.
You don't owe me an explanation, and you don't need to push yourself into a conversation you're not ready to have.
A tarot reading should be an experience that supports you, not one that makes you feel pressured to reveal more than you want to.
We can change direction, approach the cards differently, or simply leave that topic alone.
You are always allowed to decide what you're comfortable discussing.
Everything you talk about in your session is confidential and will never be shared.
Here is a great book called The Ethical Psychic
Should you Be Scared?
Absolutely not!
I will never use fear tactics or exaggerate a reading to make it sound more dramatic than it needs to be. We may touch on sensitive topics, but I will always approach them with compassion, ethics, and care for your mental and emotional well-being.
I will not speak on present or future aspects of death. I don't believe in playing God, and I don't believe in presenting a tarot reading as though the future is set in stone.
Even when cards appear to suggest difficult endings or significant changes, there can be many ways to interpret them. A card associated with death, for example, may represent transformation, a profound life change, or a part of yourself that you're ready to leave in the past.
I will not make predictions about your death or someone else's.
I also believe that future predictions represent possibilities and potential directions rather than guaranteed outcomes. The cards can help us reflect on where things may be heading, but you still have choices to make, and life is always capable of surprising us.
My intention is never to leave you frightened about what might happen. It's to help you feel more informed, grounded, and empowered to navigate whatever comes your way.
How to Prepare for Your Tarot Reading
Before your session, here are a few things you can do to help yourself get the most out of your reading.
1. Know your why.
Take a moment to think about why you're seeking a reading and what has brought you to this point in your life. You don't need a perfect explanation, just a little awareness of what you're hoping to explore.
2. Have a question or two in mind.
You don't need to write out an entire list of questions, but having a general direction can help us make the most of our time together.
3. Think about how you want to feel after your reading.
Do you want to feel more grounded? Reassured? Motivated? Empowered? Clearer about your next steps?
Knowing what you're hoping to gain can help guide the experience.
4. Give yourself a moment to settle in.
Take a breath, connect with yourself, and allow yourself to arrive without feeling rushed. If you're nervous, that's okay! You don't have to be perfectly calm to have a meaningful reading. Simply give yourself a little space to settle into the experience.
5. Remember that you're choosing yourself.
A tarot reading is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and give yourself some attention. Whatever brought you here, allow yourself to appreciate that you're taking the time to explore your own needs, experiences, and possibilities.
6. Remain curious.
Curiosity can help us keep an open mind and consider perspectives we might not have otherwise explored. You don't have to agree with every message or force yourself to find meaning in every card. Simply allow yourself to consider the possibilities and decide what feels useful to you.
If You're Afraid to Collaborate During Your Reading…
Its okay to be nervous
Let me ease your mind
Let me start by getting a little vulnerable with you.
I'm one of five girls, the middle child to be exact. I grew up in a loving home, but I always had this underlying feeling that I was different. For much of my youth, I felt overwhelmed, anxious, and fearful. The world often felt like it was just too much.
It turns out I was both on the autism spectrum, level 1, and had ADHD. That set me up for a life full of passionate pursuits, creativity, pattern recognition, overwhelm, misunderstandings, and a whole lot of struggle.
I lost my mother to cancer at the age of 15, and less than a month later, my grandfather on my father's side passed away suddenly, also from cancer.
I lived in the shadow of confusion and grief for a long time. Eventually, I began finding a deeper sense of purpose in a life that had, at times, felt purposeless.
In the years that followed, the rest of my grandparents passed away. I also lost friends who died far too young and far too soon.
I spent over a decade working in hospitality and public service, serving and bartending for people from all walks of life. Throughout those years, I was constantly connecting with people, picking up on feelings, and experiencing those little intuitive nudges.
Through all the trials and struggles, the financial strain, the creative endeavours, the successes, the heartbreaks, the strained relationships, the people who stayed, and the ones who drifted away, I always had this underlying knowing that I was meant to help people see themselves.
And I mean really see themselves, on a level that many people don't take the time to explore.
You see, I get a sense about people. Sometimes I feel an urge to say something specific, offer a detailed observation, or provide support around who someone is and who they're becoming.
I've shed many layers throughout my life and become many different versions of myself, but one thing that has remained consistent is my ability to sit with someone in their darkness , embrace them where they are and bring out their light.
I've had plenty of moments when I didn't have it all figured out. How do you think I learned tarot in the first place?
I learned because I wanted to go deeper. I wanted to understand my own patterns and cycles, explore how my life was unfolding, and make sense of the people I was meant to meet and the experiences I was moving through.
I wanted to feel affirmed when my gut was telling me, “This is a bad idea,” even when there wasn't much evidence on the surface to explain why.
And often, looking back, my gut was right. Tarot helped me explore those feelings, recognize patterns, and reflect on what I might otherwise have overlooked.
I wanted to be called out when I wasn't being entirely honest with myself about a person, a situation, or my own choices. I wanted to understand myself more deeply, even when the answers weren't necessarily what I wanted to hear.
Tarot has helped me avoid mistakes, and it has also consoled me when I made them anyway.
It's been such an expansive practice for me that I'm willing to go as deep as you feel comfortable going.
I'm far from perfect. I believe I'm a good person, but I also recognize my own darkness. I've learned that making room for contradiction, acknowledging our shadows, and understanding our own duality can help us become more balanced, compassionate, and understanding of ourselves and others.
And that's a big part of what I want to bring to my readings.
I'm not here to pretend I have life figured out, or that the cards hold every answer. I'm here because I know what it's like to feel lost, to search for meaning, to question yourself, and to want someone to help you make sense of what you're experiencing.
Sometimes we need reassurance. Sometimes we need a different perspective. Sometimes we need someone to gently challenge us when we're avoiding something we already know deep down.
And sometimes we just need a space where we can be honest about the messy, contradictory, beautiful, confusing experience of being human.
That's what I want my readings to offer you.
You don't need to have the perfect question, and you don't need to tell me everything. You don't even need to know exactly what you're looking for.
All I ask is that you come with a little curiosity and a willingness to explore.
I'll bring the cards, my intuition, and a willingness to sit with you in the light and the shadows.
Together, we'll see what the cards have to say.
